Here's a quick way for finding out which Linux distribution you have. Probably won't catch everything, but it should find a lot of the major ones.

 

# ls -d /etc/*version* /etc/*release*
ls: /etc/*version*: No such file or directory
/etc/lsb-release.d  /etc/redhat-release  /etc/redhat-release-

As you can see, this example finds a Redhat distro
